Recently swapped my 89 dtr125 for this mid 80's TY 250 mono I've been after a trials bike for a while now after the rapid demise of my Montesa which never really got going (a host of issues, mainly stuck in top gear : . I am dead chuffed with the TY, it's not perfect which is perfect for a trials bike IMO as it's going to get chucked about a bit as that's all part of the fun. I've changed the oil and dumped the fuel (you never know the history) drained the carb which seemed clean enough and cleaned the filter and air box out. Also I've serviced the brakes and had a quick once over the whole plot which seems in fairly good nick. It's getting plenty of use having been out 3 times in the first week to various local trials locations, it's no longer as clean as it was ;D Here's a few pics as I got it v v v

Aye, just came back from Poles wood today as it happens. The woods were proper slippery and a few climbs I could do last week I couldn't today. Rode in my jeans and had to drive home in my pants whilst drying the caked on wet mud on the heater of the Transit.
Lucky I've loosened up the levers on the bars so they spin rather than snap now, the bike went on it's side a fair few times today.
If you have a chance to get a twin shock then do it. The 175 especially has a rep for being a sweet handling machine. Some weld on some twin shocks to these monos so they can compete in twin shock trials, others just don't think that's cricket. Me, I'd like a disk brake please and a few kilos less ;D

I've sold the van the TY had been living in since purchase so whilst I had it out and was not riding it I gave it a long overdue wash. Under the mud I found it had worn somewhat in my ownership (no change there ) Ah well, dirt bikes should be used as such and as such get scruffy quickly, never mind. It's well serviced these days at least and paint and stickers can re applied if you so desire. Shocking find was the snapped rear shock spring (that will be the creaking noise then) even more shocking was the fact someone had had a go at welding it before. Not wanting to re weld the spring and finding that the otherwise good shock will not come apart I've stuck in a Yam TTR125 shock for the time being, it's soft as s*** though it keeps me trialing for the time being so in that case is perfect I'll try and get some better quality pics of it up at some point, the phone ones above are rubbish.

whoa, welded spring, lol i did that once but that was only to hold a bike up so it could be rolled around the shop It's amazing what people will do, I'm all for a quick bodge now and again but somethings need doing proper. It seems the previous owner of the TY was good at keeping it clean with nice stickers and paint and it does have fresh looking head and base gaskets. It's seeing a hell of a lot of use in my hands and is starting to look shabby with peeling stickers, frame going back to steel where my boots rub and engine cases too. Just broke my 2nd clutch lever yesterday though it is very well serviced despite looking a little ragged Still not got any better pics of this but do have a link to a few here from the Wiley BXDE ;D www.teamsnapper.co.uk/26-12-10-121-130/2/med/f122__2_.htmThe conditions were the worst of any enduro I've competed in with snow and ice everywhere. Trials bike was an advantage in the tricky going definitely not on the fast bits though ;D Good fun event as ever mind.

you modern trials riders have it so easy, my father and brother used to compete in trials (dad 1950s, brother 1960s) both used "outfits" as in a chair on the side as for the base machines my dads was an es2 norton which was replaced with a brough superior and brothers was an ariel twin of some sort so your bike probably weighs less than just the sidecars used to ttfn glenn ps are plastic levers still available to combat snapage problems

Got any pics of the Brough, Norton, Ariel? Not a fan of plastic levers, the ones I've tried in the past felt flexi and then broke More pics loading up, photobucket is playing up tonight so you'll need to wait for a bit. Cheers for all the comments

Fork seals or more so the fresh oil they now hold have made for a much better ride, shows up the back shock to be truely s**t though. Back to it's natural state. I going to look into getting this one registered for the road, that will be a laugh.

Much riding has led to the inevitable spend Brakes have never really worked so I bit the bullet and splashed out on new pads. Having a brake will open up all sorts of new riding spots ;D Letting loads of kids at work ride it has killed the clutch so that needed doing too. It's a big bugger in one of these. New friction plates fitted. And ready to roll once more, will be up in the Welsh hills in a few weeks
