So, i got myself a project bike. A DT125, red, 1986 i believe. Bought as a box of bits, very cheap, matching numbers but no V5 or reg. So first thing first, apply for the docs, then if all is well start to rebuild Needs a few bits but nothing too major. Pics tomorrow. Im sure there will be many questions, and yamaha 125 experts on here? First quetion, will similar age YZ parts fit? Im thinking suspension (i assume stiffer, better, higher?) and plastics. What about the tank? YZ tanks are plastic i believe, swapable? Legal? I need a front wheel too, it has an 18" wheel with a bg solid disc, i think this may be wrong. Caliper isnt fitted so not sure. Are YZ wheels different? Lighter? Better? If anyone has any parts, i need (assuming i get the V5) plastics, switch gear, headlight, oil tank, front wheel, levers, and no doubt many other bits. Do i need mirrors? Indicators? It has space for a pillion so i guess i need indicators. Thanks

Plastic tanks are legal. Funny rules with lights, can legally use hand signals and run during daylight hours. Think if you have brake light then you need indicators but could be wrong.
How about tzr rims and going for that supermoto look?

TZR wheels hey... Maybe YZ USD forks, TZR wheels (early unless i convert to disc rear brake) Could be cool. What are the chances of front brake disc interchangability? TZR's have bigger discs, wonder if i could put DT/YZ disc on TZR wheel... I guess i might be able to change swing arm to get rear disc too, ill look into it. Need to make sure it isnt stolen first

Front wheel The brake caliper i have doesnt fit the forks, seems like its the wrong side too. So, brake caliper is wrong, wheel is wrong, forks might be wrong too?

wheel looks like its from a generic yamaha commuter rxs135/sr125,probably just put in there to make it a rolling chassis. forks look ok. the least amount of pain would be to get a tzr125 forks swingarm and wheels and make them fit. trying to make a tzr wheel fit yz forks fit dt125 frame doesn't sound like fun.. think yours is also a dt125r, the dt125 had no shock linkages and the shock was attached to the top of triangular brace on the swingarm.

Thanks.
To keep it standard i'll need a wheel and complete front brake, might be easier to just put either a complete YZ USD front end on it, ive read about this and it doesnt seem too hard, or as you say, all TZR bits.
Any idea how hard these might be to fit?
I can get spacers and stuff machined easy enough.

Well summer has started, i kick myself every time i get me a project bike around this time of year, there always just done in time for winter. If it were my bike i'd get what i know works, put them together and ride it! then plan outrageous mods I've no idea how hard the tzr bits would be to fit, i do know yamaha love sharing road bike bits across the range.

Thats my thoughts too.
Just roughly assembled the bike, there is LOTS missing.
Most of it i knew, but seems all the electrics are from a different bike and all the nuts and bolts seem to be missing.
Ive got a suspision it may cost too much to get in one piece, but if the V5 comes back ill either build it, sell it as bits, or look for a cheap broken field bike'd DT as a donor.
Of the top of my head its missing (or are broken)... All levers and controls whatever holds the sprocket on oil pump cover Front wheel Front brake Rear brake rod Chain guard All electrics (i dont mind making a loom though) All ignition etc Clocks Front wheel spindle Oil tank petrol cap gear lever brake lever most nuts and bolts.
Would probably have been easier to list what i do have!
I also think the clutch has been replaced and doesnt work.
On the plus, bore looks ok, gears select, tank is good, frames ok, forks seem ok, seat is good, got renthal bars, carb etc is complete.
Ill take another pic later.

This is where it stands, although not much is bolted down. I like it though

Looking at that last photo....it has a drum rear brake so thinking its the dt125Lc, bet rd125 bits would be a direct fitment....last last bit was thinking aloud.
