I've got a problem with the indicators on the GN, when I got the bike a few months back they flashed really fast, the same as when a bulb has gone but all the bulbs were lighting up. When it went for it's MOT the tester put the indicators on and they were really slow, he started the bike and they flashed really fast. He said it was probably the battery that was at fault. Now the indicators are being a pain in the ar*e, when I put them on they'll light up but won't flash. If I ride for more than 10 or 15 minutes they'll kinda work (flash irratically at varying speeds or work for a few flashes & then give up). I don't think it's an earth problem, could the battery indeed be b*ggered or could it be the flasher relay? The bike starts on the electric start without any problem so I'm not sure if there's any problem with the battery at all. Just thought I'd post on here in case anyone has had the same problem, any suggestions/ideas would be grand. Cheers.

I usually chuck the indicators and use hand signals, harder to leave them on by mistake then! flasher relays are fairly universal, could you borrow one to test?

My mate has an 80's Kwak GPZ which isn't on the road yet. Might see if I can tag his relay. ;D

Will do Saw my mate wiuth the Kwak at the pub & he's got some relay's knocking about so I can have one to check the relay. On a different note I put her away in the shed last night, went in there this morning to get some tools & there was a strong smell of petrol & a big wet patch under the GN. I filled her up last night and about a 1/4 of the tank has leaked out overnight, it's dripping from (what I think) is the overflow pipe (clear pipe which exits at the base of the carb). Considering the running problem I'm wondering if I'd do well just to buy a new carb & be done with it, only thing is the one's I can find are pattern parts and I found that pattern carbs for VW's were always cack. As Terra suggested I could use a Slide carb (GS I think), my mate said the Suzi DR also used the same engine/carb as well. I've checked fleabay & there's no genuine carbs on there.

strip the carbs down and clean them sounds like a good place to start

correct dr has the smae slide carb (and engine), if there is petrol coming out of the over flow, it's the floats, some times a simple tap on the bottom side of carb can free them and stop the leak. A strip and a clean like JTM says will only cost you time, give it a go.

Cheers Jawa & Terra, my fannymold is pretty fugged and been glued back together. It's airtight but if I pull the carb it'll probably need replacing, I'll get a new one ordered then give the carb a strip & clean. I have tapped the side of the carb & there's no fuel weeping from the drain pipe now, I have turned the fuel tap off whilst I'm not using it.

Sorted the indicator problem out, started by checking the earths & connections at the bulbs. All seemed clean and good contact was being made, I turned to the relay after this. As soon as I pulled the plug out of the relay all became obvious, a nice crusty layer of rust & cack was all over the spades. I used some fine wet & dry to clean it off, plugged it back it & still no indicators, just a high pitch buzz when switched on (hadn't noticed this before as the bike has always been running). I pulled the cover off the relay and the inside was covered in the same rusty cack. Ordered a new one from Wemoto yesterday & it came this morning (next day delivery is great ;D) Plugged it in & they work a treat, should have checked the relay first but at least I know all the earths & connectors are nice and clean now. Would certainly recommend Wemoto, I emailed them a while back regarding a carb & the guy (Ralph I think his name was) was very helpful. I'll be ordering a chain & sprocket set off them next, new airfilter (as mine has seen better days) & a new oil filter as I don't know when it was last changed. Be nice to 'fettle' with it a bit more and learn a bit more about her.
