The tank on my Zephyr has 2 very small dints, the paint hasn't cracked or marked in any way and the metal isn't creased - has anyone had any success removing these type dents DIY, or used one those car 'Dentman' type services for their bike?..

ive not used one for my bikes but have for my car and he did a fantastic job, some bastard one night jumped on the roof, bonnet and kicked the 2 doors the dent guy said he would try his best and on the doors & bonnet you just could not see any marks on when hed done. you could the roof but he told me you would has it had creased over the strenthning bars. but overall id recomend these sort of guys

I've heard it works if you fill the tank with water to the brim and freeze it. It should push the dent out, or at least part of it. Repeat if necessary be sure to make sure all the water is out before filling with petrol though

old skool way was to make up a bunch of weirdly shaped tyre irons and insert them via the filler then hammer out the dent. Lewis's idea sounds logical and apart from taking lots of time should work. Are the dents small and deep or large and flat?

Thanks for the replies..... The dints are very small (one on the top, one on the side) and I'm sure they'd push out very easy if I could get to the back of them - but of course that the problem. Someone else mentioned the ice method or filling the tank with compressed air to push out the dents, but my worry is these methods may distort the shape of the tank/metal and other than these dents the tank is perfect and the paintworks original and unmarked. I may give one of those 'Dentman' type firms a ring and see if they'll take it on. Then again I may go for a Dream machine retro paint jobs similar to this.. ;D ;D ;D

i had a ding that used to annoy me loads so i tacked a screw to the tank and pulled it with pliers then sanded it down good as new

That paint job needs to be done! I know, and I'm VERY tempted to get it done. It's a special edition of 6 from the original Zephyr's done by Kawasaki to celebrate 20 years since the launch of the original Z1.

there are several options to remove small dings the first one i would try is a sink plunger, just whack it on the dent with a soapy water mix to improve adhesion then give it a good tug to try and shock the dent out another way is to pressurise the tank but there is a risk of the tank opening up so to prevent this first put a few ratchet straps around the tank a way a chap i used to know used to get dents out was to empty the tank, then standing well back, chuck a match in the top and let the whoomph blow out the dent (worked a few times but one tank opened up) since the paint is good on top an option would be to cut a hole in the bottom so you can push the dent out, then patch the bottom and paint over, but since the patch is hidden it dosent need to be a good match i have seen a zephyr with the z900 paint job and it really floated my boat ttfn glenn
