Does anybody know of anything definate about indicators, all my stuff has always been either old or competition based both of which fall into exemption catagories so don't need them. I had an idea in the back of my mind that anything without pillion pegs didn't strictly need them either although that could have been chain guards...

Chain guards aren't required and like lights/indicators are only tested if they are fitted....as far as my local MOT tester has passed/told me!

Pretty sure you need winkers after a certain year... I can't remember what that year is though I do know that if they are not fitted i.e you've taken them off and blanked the switch then your tester may pass them. I have taken out the switch and just simply blanked off with some tape in the past and this has been fine though may not be the case for all testers. I have also passed many a test without a (over the top) chain guard though have on each occasion had no pillion pegs fitted. I've always had the lower chain guards fitted as that's the bit that will lope off a dangling leg, foot, hand, penis between the chain and sprocket!
For the definitive check the MOT regs or ask your friendly local tester.

Thanks but that doesn't really go into it, just says they should be fitted and operating..
Don't think i've ever had a lower chainguard fitted to anything other than my Montesa which had chain tubes upper and lower (so you couldn't see just how buggered the chain was getting)

Before some time in 85 (i forgett date) they are not needed. After that they are. MOT law is just mot. It doesnt make yiur bike roadworthy or legal... You can pass an mot... Ride out the test centre and be done by plod. Because lets not confuse motorists right!! For sva a bike must have a maximum of 2 indicators at the front no less than 240mm appart. At the rear a maximum of 4indicators no less than 180mm appart. SOME mot testers will pass them without... Others wont! Mot really goes off the concept.. If it isnt fitted... It cant be tested! You can turn up to an mot on any vehicle with no lights at all and it will pass. However if you have one light (ie... Some think they will NEED the brake lamp) then it will fail ... You either have none at all.. Have one, then the rest MUST be fitted. Chainguards arent a must have... Unless the chain is positioned in such a way that if it were to snap it could potentially damage a person. Ie pillion.. Most mot places will insist they are present where pillion footpegs are in place. Single seat... Ie no pillion and no problem. The police cant actually do you if you are stopped. They can however call vosa out.. Who can!
My friend took a bike for mot.. No lights. No clocks etc ... Passed. Police pulled him outside After riding off and calked vosa out!

You need indicators if 1986 and can exceed 30 miles per hour. Exception to this is bikes if they only have one seat and are 'primarily for off road use' this is determined by the bike meeting certain criteria the main one being ground clearance.
A speedo is not tested at mot but to be road legal after mot you need one. Which is probably what your mate got done for. Having no lights you usually get away with fine. But like you said if you have even one you need everything to pass.

As stated, what is required for an MOT is not necessarily what is required by law. As far as the 'Road Vehicles Lighting Regs' go you need indicators unless at least one of the following exemptions apply: A vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph. A vehicle first used before 1st April 1986. A vehicle which is constructed or adapted primarily for use off roads (whether by reason of its tyres, suspension, ground clearance or otherwise) and which can carry only one person or which in the case of a motor bicycle combination can carry only the rider and one passenger in the sidecar.
