Not mine
But possession is 9 tenths of the law ;D
And that O so sweet sounding 500 twin
Man, it's so pretty I'm scared of it.
Made within spitting distance of my front door too.
So, it belongs to one of the guys who attends a over 50's group at the center I work in. He has owned it for many years (6 maybe, can't remember) and in that time it has covered a mere 50 miles. It was bought for him by his sons as he used to have one back in the day and had hankered (as you do) for one again.
Why is it in my lock up then? you may ask. Well he has decided to disown his children and has gifted it to me on account of my being supremely handsome ;D check the reflection for proof.
Sorry, drifted off into the realms of fantasy there, I wish. It is at FB towers due to it dumping it's oil (surprise, surprise) and it's gentleman owner being a tad embarrassed by the puddle it leaves when he goes to visit friends on it.
Now, I have in the past suggested carrying a sheet of cardboard or fixing up some sort of drip tray arrangement which would be a helpful after market part for many retro bikes but this just will not do for this discerning owner. He is also worried as it seems to be wet sumping when left standing plus filling up the chain case. His old one had a one way valve to stop it dropping the oil back into the sump but I am led to believe this may be a mod and/or not standard issue?
Now I'm aware that if left standing for a long time leaks will occur and I am thinking that the build up in the sump would maybe cause it to leak into the chain case.
The owner really wants it leak free but I reckon that would mean a costly rebuild and surely if left for long periods without use it is likely to leak again anyhow. Even if every gasket and seal was replaced it could well leak due to dodgy castings on the case and what have you or have I just been mis educated?
The deal is that if it is something simple I shall fix it but if not then it's really outside my comfort zone to tinker internally with something this precious as this not to mention very time/all consuming and I just don't have the space in my life. The owner is well aware of this and I am to find a trusty specialist if that is the case.
Any tips, help and advice on oil leaks or reputable spannering outfits would be gratefully appreciated.
In the meantime I shall clean up the motor and run it up then leave it for a bit to see what happens.
