Went to start it up and go for a ride yesterday and the slider had seized up in the carb! The float chamber looked like it was full of mud, so gonna take it over a mates and ultrasonic clean and rebuild, will get some exciting pics for you!

always drain the fuel, todays fuel nearly always has ethanol in it.

I always turn the tap off and run bikes out of fuel, but this crap has been building up for a while! The amal man has all the rebuild kits, so I will find out the jet sizes and send them off.

Have you cleaned the tank out lately??? sounds like rust. Check the filter in the banjo for crud.
The slider sticking is probably airborn corrosion. Bear in mind the slider should only ever see a small amount of fuel off of the needle.

Tanks fibreglass and I sealed it up before using modern fuel (was brand new before fitting to this bike). The banjo end was clean, but like I said, the bike had sat for nearly 30 years and doesn't look like the carb was touched before I bought it. The carb is a larger 389, not off this model/year so could have come from anything! Its got a filtered fuel tap fitted, not that they are up to much.

According to Amal the carb should be a 1 1/16" 376 Monoblock. However a similar AJS was fitted with the 389 and it had the settings:
Bore: 1 1/8" Main Jet: 260 Needle Jet: .106 Pilot Jet: .25 Cutaway: 3 Needle pos: 3
Hope this helps.

Carb rebuilt and fired up pretty easy after. Picks up better now and idle's well. If we get any decent days before christmas I'll be out on it!
