The 250 doesn't fit? in what way, surely anything can be made to fit with a bit of headscratching and metal!

gn200 with a cam upgrade will be an awesome bike Sounds like it. ;D The thing is the GN is ideal for the distance I'm doing/limited access to the back garden (a bigger just wouldn't get through the gap I have to use). It feels alot nicer now the bars have been changed, a bit more grunt would make it a lovely bike to use everyday & the odd ride out at the weekend. The 250 doesn't fit? in what way, surely anything can be made to fit with a bit of headscratching and metal! The 250 is a twin, the 200 Djebel is a single so easier to work with (albeit slightly taller than the 125). As you say anything can be made to fit but to give myself alot of work for an extra 50cc doesn't seem worthwhile (my lazy side revealing itself here ). If I could find a Djebel 200 I'd be very happy to use that, as Terra said, cammed up it would be a potent little engine. ;D

the 250 is a single, but with twin exhausts (one per valve) it's more like a debored/destroked 400 then an upgraded 125. massive altogether. only seen one close up but i'm fairly sure it doesn't share a thing with the 125. i only got a few miles on my gn before ditching those daft cruiser bars. no accuracy or grip from the front like that. have you considered just chuckin a cam into the 125? fourstrokes are hard to get power out of but every little bit helps.

The handling is vastly improved, not a fan of 'cruisers' full stop, don't like the appearance of 'em. I guess a cam in the 125 is a possibility, maybe source a 2nd engine to rebuild with a performance cam so I've still got the bike to use whilst building the 2nd one up.....Hmmm. I'm not sure how long these 125's are meant to last, she's done just over 45k now so putting a fast cam might wear the ol bugger out.

i think the rockers are the first to wear. if i was buying a second engine id buy a 200 (put out a want ad) not a 125, unless it was cheap and i really wanted to tune it considered a honda xl? that engine has been going for ever in various honda models.

That XL looks ok, although I'm not a huge fan of that style of bike. A wnated ad for a 200 is a good idea, something I'll do in the new year for sure.

Does he mean the xl engine or the bike itself?

No i don't mean the engine should go into the GN, but you reminded me of these beauties, the gb400/500 and the xbr500.

After a bit of 'net searching' I think they'll be out of my budget, however the CB500 looks pretty good, more within budget and seem to be more available......Any thoughts on them?
