looking at old bikes on the internet, it's a sign your gonna buy one aren't you.... Haha, well you're on the right lines. My priority is to get my test done in 2012, once that's out of the way I'll be looking for something to do a light build/resto on. I like the stuff from the 60's but price/parts costs etc kinda put's it out of reach, as I'll be using it as a daily it would also not really work to use an old old bike. Jap stuff is pretty reliable and I like the lines of the stufff from the late 70's/early 80's & something that isn't a basket case is within my range. Not looking for anything huge, 200/250/350cc really. Something like this, was only up the road as well www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180767771890?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649First things first, the test has to be done before I buy anything else. Once I've passed it'll be a matter of getting some cash together to buy said bike, I'll keep using the GN until it's ready. It's not the most thrilling thing to ride but it's alot nicer now the bars have been changed.

I was gonna suggest a yamaha rd, the engines can be kept going for ever, as long as you consider the bearings and pistons as consumable service items.Worst case a crank case bearing support maybe worn out, fairly rare. Two strokes have a silly grin type of performance too, Cons: fuel will disappear at a silly rate, and if you end up with one with a points ignition, you'll be forever setting them or blowing holes in the piston when there not set. better if its only a second bike these 70/80s two strokes, best follows the rules. rule 1 buy a runner rule 2 buy a honda.

Buying a runner is a definate, I don't want to have to rebuild the engine before I can do anything else. As you say, Honda's are probably the best bet. Been looking at the CD (Benly), seem to be affordable and pretty bulletproof if looked after a bit.

well if its your first big bike and you have some time to save up, i'd skip a stone age benly (which one btw?) and try for a modern bike with retro looks. cb1-400 xjr400r zrx400 or a mental xantia( least i think thats how it spelt) sexy katana 400 avoid vetec 400 bandit, havn't actually seen one running. ever. suzuki inazuma 400

bros 400/650 product two (coz i like the wheels off the two) had one myself got a mate started on one and another mate on the (similar) deuville 1.bp.blogspot.com/_L9cU2U2LRlw/S_W5rOuRnlI/AAAAAAAAAHk/bR44B7U3Y1w/s1600/DSC01291.JPGapart from the eccentric chain adjuster seizing and the valve adjustment being a bugger to get to AND couriers riding them all into the ground, it's a fine bike! totally skip that CD, 6v electrics, drum brakes, 4 speeds, i'd rather have a GN and i hate GN's lol get something with at least 30-40bhp s'not really an upgrade other wise. no real idea how good the xjr is, but since it's not a 32 year old bike that was designed more like 40 years ago i'd put money on it being more reliable

Fair point, as I used to use cars that were 30+ years old as daily transport I still think along the same lines when something a 'shade' newer would be better suited.......Thanks to 'a voice of reason' @ Andy, Mr Terra & I were discussing some options on this recently. Suzuki did a 200 that can fit the GN, there is a GN model that has a 250 but the engine doesn't fit the 125. I have been looking around the net for a 200 engine with no real luck so far, however I'm not in a rush just yet as I want my cash towards the test.

the thing to remember with bikes is that there engineered to have a shorter life then cars. a 30 year old car has about the same amount of life left in it as a 15 year old bike. that cb450 black bomber you posted up in the first post, my dad has one and two cl450's quite like it, stupid things like throttle brake and clutch cables are all cracking but he want's to keep them on since there original, it's immaculate, kept in the house, never restored, low mileage but it's falling apart anyway, just too old now.

Good point, I guess I'll need to be looking at newer stuff for daily use.
