Bought this 3ma about a month ago and managed to pick it up last week and this week i actually did some thing to it! don't like it when people chopped up the rear panels like this, not my style. rebar. damn farmers. A suprise, a fully functioning air filter. Question: Is this part of VAJ? where is the big pipe coming out the top supposed to connect to? it's just flapping around. (air in for the VAJ, supposed to be connected to airbox, no biggie) ran out of paint SP Tadao 'Jackals worth twice what i paid for the bike. it actually ran on this swill the all important 'sit on it and make noises' part Plans are a simple restore and improve, engine sounds sweet, pistons are not scored from what i can see up the exhaust, haven't run it for long because it's running on premix (with the pump still running and attached!) also no oil in the gearbox and the although it idles fine it's stalls when you try to take off (carbs need cleaning). This is how you do a classic appreciating bike, yamaha only made this bike for two years, rare and fast

Oooooo I know someone that has one of these sitting in there garage. They used to race it years ago and then parked it in the garage and never touched it again. I have tried to buy it off him so many times but he refuses to sell it!
Lovely looking bikes though!

Even if it's a lowly 2ma, it be worth badgering him some more, old two strokes are definitely worth getting, simple to understand and repair when they stop and massive fun when they go.

A mate of mine is gonna make this for me, friends with CNC machines are keepers it's a gearchange lever btw, the aftermarket foot pegs are in a different place compared to the original so it's uncomfortable to reach the gear change lever.

Very nice! One of my top ten all time Yams. :-)
I think it was in MCN that reported that Japanese collectors are starting to hang on to their 80s/90s two strokes which, in turn, reduces imports to the UK and subsequently creates a less supply/more demand market. Fine if you have one, not so good if you want one. Even early NSR250 MC16/18s are fetching serious cash. It's a natural progression since the teenagers that had 250 strokers in the late 80's early 90's are now looking to recapture their youth.

I like to think prices are going up because proper two-stokes are just so much damn fun! i find it very hard to drive any two stroke with out using big gobs of throttle ;D This is probably the only bike i will ever own that will get a nice paintjob and a proper refresh if not actual restoration.

yep strokers are a barrel of laughs i was weaned on old RD's both air cooled and elsies.... never had a TZ though as i kinda got sickened off bikes for a wee while as i had a load stolen in space of a week, and then uni etc got in the way i was to skint to buy and run bikes (still am lol) TZR's were to dear when i was messing with bikes and the period they got cheap(er) was co-incidental with me not having bikes. also owned KH's, YB100's, GP suzi's... i love the simplicity of the motors, air, fuel, compression, spark.... they will go. no valves, no camchains to go wrong.
I think its because the emission laws have basically killed the 2 stroke in the sense that most of us remember them, like yank "muscle" cars in the 70s the catalyser and all the emissions control stuff killed the power compared to the 60's models, so old ones are starting to fetch decent cash... get em while ya can! and hold onto them! still the cheapest fun ya can have.

Well i had a spin off it the other day, didn't go very far or fast since i had no number plate, just enough to confirm the engine was sweet, the grips were falling off, the tyres were flat and the i couldn't reach the gear change. Since it could be doomsday before my machinist friend turns out the proper gearchange lever, it was time to mod the standard one. scrap paper calculated that if i needed 20mm extra on the long bit i'd have to have 5mm extra on the short bit to keep the throw standard. Dead handy magnet for welding. All back in one piece. will have to do some internet shopping soon, where's me money?
