So what do you reckon; How many miles between oil changes? Best quality oil you can get for your machine? Cheaper oil changed more regular? Filter ever time? My CB 500 gets decent semi synthetic ever 6k or so (I always forget to make a note of the mileage, or forget were I made that note) The oil filter gets changed ever 2nd or 3rd time, surely a blocked up filter filters better no? The Ural has only 4k on it from new but has countless oil changes to it's name due to my belief of it being a less refined machine and of course changing lots whilst running in.

I think those urals have a very efficient centrifugal filter that spin's out all the crud, they were design for owners that might not see oil change facility's for a very long time..
PS it might be while until there is enough of us for a mass debate lol

I personally would say new filter and good quality oil every service interval, same with brake fluid and other service items, look after your bike, and it looks after you. id rather spend a few quid on oil and service items than a fortune on a rebuild or a spell in the hospital.

One trick is to check under the valve cover, if you have black gunk in their the oil can't suspend the dirt in it any more, change oil more often. If it's golden and nice under their good job keep it up.

Ive kept a chinese pit bike engine running with no faults at all for 5 years, regular oil changes with your avrage castrol 10w40. Just shows if you look after something it will last.

well for me it depends on how you use it, if im just pootleing round town it gets changed more often than if im doing long runs

^^ whs if used in the town a lot or short trips, condensation builds up in the engine as it doesnt get hot enough to "dry" out the moisture.if left this forms the "mayo" that can sometimes be found thru the oil level window or under the rocker cover good long rides (not thrashing it) get the engine really warm inside and the moisture gets dried out. Honda's build quality means you can probably get 5-6000m between oil changes, with a filter every other change Ural's being more agricultural build mean looser tolerances in the engine,so oil changes should be done more often.4000m? and i think the Ural has a washable filter which can be done every change.

PS it might be while until there is enough of us for a mass debate lol At least you can say the forum has now 'arrived' as it has it's first Oil debate...... I wonder how long before we get a thread from 'Oil Man'... ;D TBH is there really anything to debate, though?. If your boiler breaks down at home who do you ask for advice?, ie the company that 'actually' designed and built the thing in the first place or some bloke on an internet forum who reckons he knows a bit about plumbing?..... Car and motorcycle manufacturers spend years and billions of ££'s designing and building engines, then then spend billions more on R&D to test these engines to destruction in every possible scenario to make sure they perform as they should, so if it says in your handbook to change the oil & filter every 6K miles you can be pretty sure it's the right thing to do. You can close the thread, now.... ;D ;D ;D
