Well after looking around for a while for a Cruiser/Chop/Custom i came across an obscure ad on a site I've never seen before, and the wording of it and the "offers" price tag whetted my appetite enough to get me to call the number to see what the story was. I have been looking for a Honda Shadow 750/1100 or a Yam Dragstar 650/1100, this ad though was for something that initially ive not been keen on... Suzuki Cruisers, It was for a 1986/7 VS1400 Intruder with 29.000 on clock, a load of custom parts like drag bars etc, story was that the bike belonged to the rather lovely older lady that i got speaking to's husband whom had passed away, and the bike had been sitting for 3yrs covered in a warm dry garage, as he was to ill to make use of it, last MOT was 2008-9 and hes owned bike since 1997, full history with it, and well serviced and maintained. i then asked her what she was looking for the bike, expecting to be asked a couple of grand at least, and maybe a bit more. she said she would be happy at £600... happy days, i got my cousin to nip round check it over (im in Aberdeen bikes in South Wales, he lives 15 mins drive from her) he said look for age etc bike is sound, sure it has some minor cosmetic issues, but mechanically cant be faulted. well i cuts a deal, money changed hands via my cousin and its mines... i only need to arrange delivery of the bike or persuade a friend to take me down to get her.
Do any of you guys have a courier service they can recommend to transport it from port talbot area up to aberdeen? The bikes a little bigger than the 650/750 i generally expected to get, but cant moan at the price to much!
heres a video of her running, she sounds fruity!
And some pics
Mechanically the engine sounds fine, so ideally id plan on just a service, and a good scrub and polish, check service items like valve clearances, oil change, filter change, and new plugs.. carbs might need a clean but ill just try some spray through cleaner instead of a strip, the petrols been sat in tank, so even though she starts fine from a separate supply and a good battery, id do a clean as a precaution. id like to turn here into a bobber as she isn't standard anyways, id like frame in matt black, tank, fenders and sidepanels in same, but with some orange flames job or scallops in pearl with white pin striping outlines. id like to remove a lot of the bling bling, and have a bobbered rear fender, the wheels might clean up, or they might need relacing with new stainless rims and spokes, i cant say till i get them up, exhausts i will get ceramic coated or some new stainless slashcuts made if i can. i need to do this as best i can on a tight budget, I'm guessing id like to keep total to under 1750-2k including purchase of bike and getting it to way i want it, so as much as i can remove, re-use or replace cheaply i would be chuffed. paintwork i know a man that does a decent job for a fair price. but I'm at a loss about what kinda fender i can use, as standards got to much holes, mounts etc for the bling on the back, single seat with springs is the ideal, small taillight, some very small discreet indicators and as minimalist as i can get with shiny stuff.
Any recommendations as to what fenders might fit on rear or front (im tempted to have a shortened one on front just to keep sprayback to min on oil cooler.. and me) i wanna loose some lard off the bike, its a big heavy beast at over 560lb's as standard. i would like extra lighting on front as im fed up of bikes with pish poor lighting on front. as i like to do a lot of late night riding if doing distance. Cossackman, any recommendations as to anybody local to aberdeen that can do welding/fab to get say a standard off the peg harley style universal fender shortened and fitted to rear without butchering the frame, as id like to have option to put it almost stock if i can later. I'm fine with spannering, and electricals, but i aint learned to weld yet nor have i a large workshop.
