Hi, assistance needed please, having got my bike on the road following a strip and repaint it has a bit of a running issue. its an 89 Yam xj600 pre diversion, built up from various sources but was a runner pre strip down, but i never actually rode it on the road. starts no problem, runs smooth, pulls well till about 7-8k then flat just wont rev any more, more a hesitation than actual misfire. then very very occasionally it will rev and pull fine. plugs fine, leads, fine, carbs cleaned, diaphragms ok all free, had two different sets of carbs on, no difference. fuel flow ok. never had it before but been suggested cdi breaking down, as said up to about 7-8k no problem, any suggestions what else it could be appreciated before i go searching for a cdi. Plus anyone know of a rear shock from something else that may fit, just noticed its leaking and good second hand jx units seem a bit scarce, dont want to spend much more on it as would like to sell soon to make room for new toys. Thanks the bike in question,

Inlet rubbers ok? Air filter clean/ok? Have you tried a different ignition coil? I'm sure Terra will be able to give you some pointers, very pretty bike.

try these things to confirm it's not the carbs:
try it with the choke on, if it's too lean this will allow you to rev out for. try it with out the air filter, if the fuel is pouring in, this will lean it out enough to rev out. try the prime setting on the fuel tap. vacuum tap might not let enough fuel in. last one, try spraying wd40 over the carbs while running, revs would change if there is an air leak.
after that, yeah see if you can borrow a cdi, chuck it in and see.
very nice and clean bike btw.

Thanks for the reponce guys, its had two differnt sets of carbs on which made no differance what so ever and think ive tried most of the other suggestions with the exception of running the tap on prime or changing the coils. Will give it a go as soon as we get some finer weather, dont like all the cleaning after riding in rain now.

is there much difference in starting when hot or cold? starting easy when cold and vis versa when hot points to the valves being tight.
what do the plugs look like? i check them first for pretty much any engine diagnostic

The plugs dont suggest its running major rich or weak, nothing out of the ordinary, starts easy hot or cold, but wll admit to not checking the valve clearance,

well if there is no difference starting hot or cold i'd say the valves are ok. but there must be something on the plugs, try running down the road with the engine trying to rev, hit the kill switch and pull in the clutch, check the plugs then, a plug chop.
if there black, its either the spark or too much fuel, if there white it must be a lack of fuel problem.
